Hillsdale Site Council Minutes
Monday, September 25, 2006

3:30-5:00pm

Present:  Tim Williams, Pam Sachs (parent), Bernadette Murphy (parent), Suzanne Radotic, Greg Lance, Marty Roberts, Marty Kongsle, Cheryl Lawton, Dorian Evers (student), Christine Crockett, Jeff Gilbert (facilitator), Yvonne Shiu (recorder), Laurie Fineman (parent)

Jeff began the meeting with a report back from last week’s Board Study Session.  Hillsdale gave respectful presentations, all presenters positively advocating for the preservation of the SLCs, the staff working together, etc.  The SLC Council met with Bob Griffin and Linda Lees Dwyer about the impending reductions and its affect on SLCs. On Monday morning, the District Administration asked each school to present acceptable cuts; the Principals from each of the six comprehensive high schools were present.  Each school discussed the effects of the possible cuts.  We will inevitably absorb reductions and we will survive the cuts.

Members of the Site Council were anxious about the next steps:

What do we do now?  Campaign?  Letters? Fundraising?  Foundation? Tapping into necessary resources

How do we cover lost sections?

The need to celebrate after it’s all over- surviving the cuts

Need to recruit a larger freshman class- Why were students turned away this year?

CSM picking up instrumental music class(es)

At one point parents were confusing District Budgetary cuts and teachers working without a contract.  Teachers were implementing “work to rule”, a 7.5 hour workday, duty free lunch.  It was explained that this would be happening anyway since teachers were currently working without a contract.

Administration shared with Council the need to reduce staff by 1.8, 1.6 of the 1.8 is overstaffing-lower than expected enrollment.
