Solar Panel Installation Celebration The Hillsdale High School Go Solar Project invites you to celebrate the installation of solar panels at Hillsdale High School on Thursday, May 14th (Ride Your Bike to Work Day!). The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 12:00 Noon in the Del Monte parking lot (Directions are provided below) With grant funding from BP and support from Home Depot, a 1.4 KW solar system, made up of eight 175 watt panels will be installed on the administration building of the school on Wednesday, May 15th. The panels will serve as a demonstration project initially, and with future fundraising and engineering work will hook into the main electrical grid of the school (fall 2008) Over the last nine months, students in the Hillsdale Go Solar Project have worked with solar professionals at Owens Electric and Solar, a San Mateo-based energy company, to learn about the basics of solar power. Initially funded by a grant from BP’s A+ for Energy program, students have learned about all things solar from equipment and economics to the science and public policy. Students have been heavily involved in fundraising and community outreach to promote solar power. In addition, Hillsdale High has partnered with Owens Electric to develop the Solar Our Schools (SOS) program, an initiative that offers discounts to community residents who purchase solar systems and a $1000 contribution to a Hillsdale Solar Fund for each system sold. The Solar Our Schools program has been recognized by a local environmental organization, Sustainable San Mateo and won an “Honorable Mention” in its 2008 Sustainability Awards ceremony in March. Save Money on Solar Power and Help HHS Go Solar! With a grant from BP, HHS will install a small group of solar panels to power our Adminstration building in the next month. We're using this event to announce the Solar Our Schools (SOS) program, a partnership with a local solar company, Owens Electric and Solar. With the SOS program, every family that purchases a solar power system will receive a 5% discount on their system, and Owens Electric and Solar will contribute $1000 to Hillsdale's Solar Fund.
