MORE INFORMATION on the GATE Parents Group web site at: http://www.gateparents.com Dear GATE families: Along with the excitement of your student’s entry into high school, we would like to introduce the GATE Parents Group of the San Mateo Union High School District. We are a non-profit organization of volunteer parents interested in providing enrichment and support to GATE students, fellow parents and teachers. The GATE Parents Group offers a variety of programs and classes including: The SAT Prep Class is offered four times a year at significantly lower cost than commercial programs. GATE students can take this class with an additional discount. The “Road to College” series by Dr. Paul Wrubel, guides parents through the overwhelming process of planning their finances for future college expenses, filling out the financial aid forms and how to pick a college. Speakers this past year included Stan Christensen from Stanford University presenting Negotiation Skills and Dr. Worrell from U.C. Berkeley regarding student achievement. Another goal of the GATE Parents Group is to support enrichment activities at the six high schools in our district. Last year, we gave grants totaling $32,000 including grants up to $1,000 per teacher, $1,000 to each school library, and $2,000 grants available to each school to help supplement Advance Placement and Honors courses. If you want the best for your GATE student, please join us and participate in the GATE Parents Group. In addition to a schedule of GATE activities, the GATE Parents Group provides a voice advocating for our GATE students to attain a wide range of challenging, enriching, and inspiring experiences and opportunities. To continue providing this level of support, we need as much participation as possible. Due to the “graduation” of some of our members, we are in need of volunteers for the following positions; - Treasurer The responsibilities are fairly light for each of these positions. If you can volunteer, or if you would like to find out more about what any would entail, please contact Harriete Berman, GATE Parents Group President 2006-2007 [bermaid@harriete-estel-berman.info or 650 345- 4078]; Daphne Chen, GATE Parents Group President 2007-2008 [daphne_chen@sbcglobal.net] or Jeanie Kwong, SMUHSD GATE, [jkwong@smuhsd.org] More information is available on our website at www.gateparents.com. We welcome you to the GATE program and wish your student all the best. A final note to students and parents to make sure that the District GATE Program has your email address for future communication. This is the primary method to inform you about upcoming classes, field trips and speakers. Sincerely, Harriete Estel Berman VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
