Smaller Learning Communities in the News
NEW: Hillsdale High's Smaller Learning Communities were featured in an article in the San Mateo Daily New. Read the article... The Center for Secondary School Redesign and The National Association of Secondary School Principals has invited Hillsdale to present its work with smaller learning communities at the Breaking Ranks 2007 High School Showcase in San Diego. The brochure describes the event as convening "24 of the most innovative and successful high schools from around the country to share their programs and strategies for success...Schools are chosen to present on the basis of their outstanding reputations for quality and innovative practices with challenging populations." Almost ten years ago, a group of teachers at Hillsdale began a book club that started the journey leading us to where we are today. One of the books they read, A Time to Learn, by George Wood, told the story of Federal Hocking High School. After a lot of hard work and with the remarkable success we have begun to see, Hillsdale finds itself presenting its story alongside Federal Hocking High at this national conference! Read the School Redesign Network's three-year evaluation of Hillsdale High's SLC implementation (PDF). See a video clip of Linda Darling Hammond talking to the Hillsdale faculty. Singapore's Director-General of Education and a group of educators from Singapore visited Hillsdale High School to gain an understanding of our Smaller Learning Communities. Singapore's Ministry of Education had read about Hillsdale's program and wanted advice on how to meet the needs of all students and how to gain the benefits of a small school in a large school setting. The San Mateo County Times and the Examiner ran articles on the visit.
