Do High School Students Need Work Permits?

All students under the age of 18 who have not yet graduated from high school must have a work permit in order to be employed during the school year or during the summer.  Hillsdale High School issues work permits to Hillsdale High School students only.  Other SMUHSD schools issue work permits to their students.  Students from schools outside SMUHSD may apply for work permits at the SMUHSD district offices at 650 North Delaware Street, San Mateo, 650/558-2299.

Hillsdale students may pick up work permit applications (“Statement of Intent to Employ Minor and Request for Work Permit”) in the Hillsdale Guidance Office.  Students return work permit applications to the Guidance Office after employer and student complete their sections of the application and parent or guardian signs the application.

The work permit is granted only if the number of hours to be worked, the work duties and other conditions meet California state requirements, and the student’s GPA meets Hillsdale’s minimum requirements.  The school may revoke a work permit or limit the number of hours and/or days that the student may work.

If a student changes jobs after obtaining a work permit, the student must apply for a new permit.  All work permits expire at the end of the summer following the school year for which they were issued.
